Artist In Residence
Raven Diablo is the main character in my first novel, Raven Diablo: Agent of Kali. Raven is a modern day warrior woman doing battle in the real Sin City, Las Vegas. She’s a highly trained assassin with a wide assortment of skills, martial and otherwise. She’s ruthless, merciless and fearless. In fact, she’s so badass, I could have called the novel Superbitch. And because I created her, I think of her as my child.
As I developed Raven, it sometimes felt as though some power was working through me, using me. I believe that the Goddess Kali was my muse.
Raven Diablo grew out of a belief that I have; a particularly strong belief. I believe that heroes are crucial to society. You can tell a lot about a culture by its heroes. Thugs, bimbos, slackers and reality tv personalities stand upon the pedestals of our modern culture. Is it any wonder contemporary society appears to be spiraling out of control and heading for the gutter? Clearly the time has come for a new breed of hero. And with that thought in mind, I created Raven Diablo: Agent of Kali.
Raven Diablo is contrary to the modern norm. She’s contrary to other female heroes who tend to look like caricatures of strippers. Raven is no sex object. But she’s contrary in other ways too. She’s a bookworm with a ravenous appetite for knowledge. She well understands the value of the elders. And she has a strong sense of personal responsibility. Raven Diablo is a leather clad badass bitch, but with a big brain, a loving heart and a moral center.
I’m in love with her. But what can you expect; she’s my hero.
